Five ways to really declutter your space
You’ve slammed your junk drawer shut for the third time today, only to forget what you were even looking for. Great. You thought you cleared it out just last week – here are 5 ways to really declutter your space and (hopefully) keep it that way!
1. Stop buying unnecessary furniture
Yes, we’re talking about that cube unit you bought to fill an awkward corner in the living room. Now you can’t even remember what’s in those compartments. When you have extra cupboards, drawers, or cabinets, it’s almost impossible not to fill them with ‘stuff’. If it’s not there, you can’t clutter it! Opt for larger, multi-functional furniture that accommodates various items while keeping you organised. For those awkward spots, consider uncluttered alternatives such as a plant, floor lamp or armchair.
2. You don’t need that many cushions (sorry!)
Don’t get us wrong, while cushions are a lovely finishing touch for a bed or sofa, they can accumulate quickly and take up lots of storage space. Buy cushions and covers from your favourite store, then purchase only the covers in the future. This way, the covers will always fit, allowing you to refresh them throughout the year. Another idea is to buy cushions that can be swapped between different spots in your home. Have you ever tried using your sofa cushions on your bedroom armchair? You might be pleasantly surprised.
3. Choose wall art that blends in
We love a typography print as much as the next person, but our eyes are drawn to words, and we can’t help but read them repeatedly. Reading 'Let’s stay home' daily can become tiresome, leading you to buy new prints more often. Instead, opt for wall décor that blends with the room’s other elements, making it less likely for your eye to be immediately drawn to it. You'll enjoy it longer. Statement prints can still work, but choose general scenic art over specific objects or notable figures.
4. Clean beyond spring
We know it feels like the cleaning never stops. But cleaning shouldn’t be reserved for spring. A clear space equals a clear mind. Set a monthly task to declutter the main drawers, cabinets and shelves you frequently use. It’s faster than you think, and your future self (and shelf) will thank you!
5. The internet is your oyster
We have more options than ever to sell home furniture and accessories. Facebook marketplace has quickly become a popular platform for selling these items. Additionally, online platforms such as Vinted and Depop are great for selling homeware.
